The main
obstacle for the country's development is the external debt
which represents 600% of the GNP (Gross National Product).
For some years
now, the government has been able to reduce the external debt.
In 1996, for example, mining produced
2,260,000 tonnes of bauxite (at Kwakwani and Ituni). 45 million
tonnes of diamonds and 12 tonnes of gold were also excavated.
