Mining

The main obstacle for the country's development is the external debt which represents 600% of the GNP (Gross National Product).

For some years now, the government has been able to reduce the external debt.

In 1996, for example, mining produced 2,260,000 tonnes of bauxite (at Kwakwani and Ituni). 45 million tonnes of diamonds and 12 tonnes of gold were also excavated.

The lowering of inflation (101% at the beginning of the 1990s) as well as a more vigorous growth since 1991 have given much hope for development in this country, where there are considerable possibilities .

Industry in Guyana is underdeveloped, yielding a contribution of only 12% of the GNP.
However the country has a great potential which should not be overlooked.
